LACH DIAMANT Supporting and Serving the Printing Industry for 60 Years
Example: Cutting Inserts for Turning of Copper Gravure Cylinders

LACH DIAMANT – Jakob Lach GmbH & Co. KG – was founded in 1922 by Jakob Lach as a diamond grinding shop for polishing jewellery diamonds (brilliants). The company is still a family business and led by the second and third generation, Horst Lach and Dipl. Ing. Robert Lach.

Today, in 2016, LACH DIAMANT has 180 employees and manufactures diamond tools for the automobile, aviation, wind energy and printing industries in its headquarters in Hanau, Germany, and in plants in Lichtenau near Chemnitz, Germany, as well as at LACH DIAMOND INC., Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.

Grinding diamonds to brilliants ended in the mid fifties due to high labour costs and a strengthened DM (up to 600 diamond grinders were employed until the start of WWII).

After General Electric made the first “man-made diamond” available to the industry in 1957, LACH DIAMANT continuously produced new developments based on these new diamonds and established itself worldwide as a pioneer for diamond tools.

The printing industry benefited from LACH DIAMANT tools since the 1960s.

One example is the development of so-called calender roll turning tools with natural diamonds for the
turning of printing cylinders and transport rolls in the paper industry.
LACH DIAMANT also developed a special procedure for stabilizing the grip and increasing the wear protection of transport rolls.

At the end of the 1960s, LACH DIAMANT succeeded in developing a natural diamond cutting edge for mirror-turning of aluminium cylinders for electrostatic copy machines.

If you will, this was already the foundation for LACH DIAMANT’s later cooperation with the turning machine manufacturer Kaspar Walter. Together they developed an entire programme for the turning of copper gravure cylinders.

This successful cooperation lasted 25 years until the spring of 2016.

Until then, LACH DIAMANT had manufactured all cutting inserts solely for the distribution by Kaspar Walter GmbH & Co. KG. As of now, all cutting inserts are directly available from the producer LACH DIAMANT.

The same applies to all services, e.g. precise resharpening, which will be available directly from LACH DIAMANT.

All customers can now benefit from our team of specially trained consultants and engineers who will help with process optimization during the turning of copper gravure cylinders – for example when troubling burrs are occurring.
