»Cool Injection« – Direct cooling signals the breakthrough in cryogenic cutting with PCD
LACH DIAMANT makes diamonds even „harder” …
In the last few years a number of publications have addressed the topic of cryogenic cutting of cast iron (GGV), titanium and special alloys, e.g. nickel-based, with PCD tools.
All these writings are based on the state of the technology, that diamond, also the polycrystalline synthetic diamond (PCD), is unsuitable for the processing of ferrous materials. At a temperature of over 720°C the diamond (carbon) starts graphitizing until it has burned completely – the same happens with PCD.
In order to apply the superior hardness of the diamond (PCD ) also in this temperature range, special coolants and tool strategies have to be developed.
The literature describes different examinations on this subject. The most promising study proved to be the cryogenic cutting with PCD by using CO2. But traditional tool designs stood against the desired maximizing.
Even PCD tools such as milling cutters, boring and turning tools with interior cooling channels fall short to reach the „hot zone” of chip formation (see illustration 2); not to mention the result of external cooling (illustration 1).
In both cases the actual effective zone was not reached. Accordingly there can be no question of a cooling of the PCD cutting edge – in both cases (illustration 1 + 2 ) the upcoming chip prevents the supply of the coolant jet into the „hot zone”.
»Cool Injection« – direct cooling patented by LACH DIAMANT – signals new strategies for the efficient PCD machining – not only of nonferrous metals but also of cast iron, special alloys, for example nickel-based – and even of titanium.
The PCD cutting edge becomes a component of the cooling system!
The aparture opening of the coolant jet is located directly in the PCD cutting face. The so-called „hot effective zone” is reached directly with »Cool Injection« – liquid or gas.
The just upcoming „thermoplastic chip” is shock-quenched – solidifies and breaks before the first contact with the component – and thus becomes the ideal chip breaker.
The cutting surface of the PCD edge remains slidable and effects an optimum chip removal. The PCD cutting edge, even with machining of aluminium and application of traditional coolant emulsions, also MMS, is kept under the critical temperature of 720°C.
By experiences on hand, up to 30% longer tool life and greater efficiency can be expected from the PCD tool with »Cool Injection«.
»Cool Injection« is capable of even more … breakthrough in the cryogenic cutting with PCD – „from emulsion to ice crystal”. All advantages of »Cool Injection« described above can be increased by the factor „x”.
The temperature of the PCD/diamond cutting material can be kept under the critical limit of 720°C. The diamond – PCD – can now apply its total hardness for the cutting of cast iron, titanium or special alloys which up to now was not possible due to its diamond’s temperature-sensitive carbon structure.
The line-up can be expanded to other materials, which due to their abrasive properties contributed to premature wear, such as special temperature-sensitive plastics or matrices.
