When, where and for which application were PCD tools used for the first time in industrial series production?

Answer: In 1973 after the world’s first presentation of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools during the Hanover Spring Fair in the premises of Kautt & Bux for turning copper raw commutators.

A that time the manufacturing of diamond tools for turning copper commutators had a long tradition at LACH DIAMANT going back to the beginning of the 1960’s – however, the cutting material was not polycrystalline (PCD) but monocrystalline natural diamond.

20 – 30 natural diamond cutters were then employed to ensure the manufacturing of new tools as well as the service for the main customers Bosch and Siemens.

Today – and now looking to EMO 2017 – LACH DIAMANT provides for all manufacturers of copper and graphite commutators a large range of PCD turning tools and tool holders tested and proven over many years for turning using the corner radius and using the straight cutting edge.

In addition there are tools for wear protection in commutator processing such as prisms, one- and two-piece bearing shells as well as for example end-stops.
