CBN Cubic Crystalline Boron Nitride for the Superior Machining of Steel
When CBN, cubic crystalline boron nitride, was first introduced in 1969 by General Electric as a grinding material under the name BORAZON, it was more expensive than gold...
Among the first diamond grinding wheel manufacturers, who received this material were the independent companies, Winter & Son, Norton and Diamant Boart and also the family- run company LACH DIAMANT.
LACH DIAMANT on the basis of this new material, manufactured the first CBN grinding wheel for the dry grinding of High Speed Tools and presented this as a worldwide new development at the Hannover Fair in 1970.
A year later, LACH DIAMANT presented at the same industrial fair, the next development of the CBN grinding wheel, namely the tressex&Mac226; wheel for plunge grinding ( pendulum grinding method) of high-alloyed hardened steel over 6 HRc.
The triumphant advanceGrinding with CBN had started and continues on, as proven, for an example, by the success of high speed grinding.
Just like synthetic diamond powder, which was compacted to polycrystalline cutting material, the same was tried with CBN powder in high-pressure synthesis and led to success.
This again resulted in a superior cutting material for the turning and milling of cast iron and hardened steel. A large selection of different CBN cutting materials shows evidence of the variety of potential applications.
LACH DIAMANT, at the 1974 Hannover Spring Fair, presented CBN tools for the turning of hardened steel and welded-on materials. Please take a look at the original brochures, shown in Picture of the month MARCH 1999
